Brooklyn, NY – The Center for Black Literature in association with Corridor Gallery, the National Conference of Artists-NY and Theatre for the Free People presents the Black Artist as Activist and Transformative Agent Arts Program. As a component of this program, funded by the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College (CUNY) will offer FREE arts workshops which focus on issues of social justice and peace. The writing, performance, and visual art workshops are targeted to youth and emerging artists who range from age 16 – 25. Workshops will be presented at various locations throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan starting Fall 2009. Registration is available online at www.theatreforthefreepeople.com.

Dr. Brenda Greene, Executive Director of the Center for Black Literature is very excited about the opportunity that youth and emerging artists will have to create, perform and display their work in public spaces. She is also pleased that Joi Sears, a young artist activist with Theatre for the Free People, is Project Director for this progressive arts program.

Founded in 2003, the Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College was established to expand, broaden, and enrich the public’s knowledge and aesthetic appreciation of the value of black literature. Partners for the project the Corridor Gallery, a community-based gallery serving Brooklyn artists and residents and the National Conference of Artists NY, whose mission to preserve, promote and develop African American culture and artists. Support is also provided by Brotherhood-Sister Sol, a Harlem based organization which provides support and resources to Black and Latino youth, and Theatre for the Free People which is dedicated to using the arts as a vehicle for social change.

Habana Outpost

Yeah.. so I'm in Love with this place. Habana Outpost, a fun, modern, eco-eatery in Brooklyn New York was built on the principles of great food, great fun, and social responsibility. Their mission is to show respect for the community, the environment, and the arts in a setting that is always fun and accessible.

Habana Outpost
is NYC's first eco-eatery. Eco-eateries are restaurants which use earth-friendly practices in their design, construction and day to day operations.

Habana Works Inc. is a nonprofit organization that aims to better the community through free programs that educate, unite and engage local members. Habana Works' programs demonstrate the impact of environmentally conscious thought and action within a community. These programs use art, architecture, videography, and design as tools to engage and instill a greater understanding of the community's role in the betterment of the planet.

Habana Outpost uses Solar Panels to convert the sun's energy into the electricty to power the restaurant.

They also use have a Rainwater Collection System which collects water from the roof of the restaurant which sanitizes, filters and stores water. It also is used to water all the plants in the garden and flush toilets.

They even have a Human powered Bike Blender which uses pedaling instead of electricity and Solar-powered cell phone and laptop charges so that customers can recharge while they eat. All in all this is a pretty awesome place and I definitely suggest making a trip here if you ever find yourself in BK.. as I have been finding myself quite a bit lately.

W - New York

It is like I woke up this morning and realized how much I loved New York. New York and I have been engaged in the most serious love-hate relationship for the past six years but he knows he will always have my heart. I thought I would just take the time to highlight one of my favorite places in the City.. The W Hotel.

There are a few W New York hotels in the city, each with their own personality. My favorite is the location on Lexington on the East Side. My undergrad dorms being a few blocks away, I would often escape here for a day at Bliss Spa.

It became like my own private oasis away from the noise of the city and the stress. The steam room in this place is heaven sent. I can't count how many hours of my life I spent in there. After operation-relaxation is complete, I like to go down to the lobby of the W Hotel and have a cocktail. I certainly suggest if you are making a trip to the city or are just looking for a relaxing weekend retreat, you should indulge yourself.. this is definitely the place to go. Did I mention they have the most comfortable beds.. EVER?
