Martin de Candre

Another one of my favorite Paris purchases..

I am completely in LOVE with the ROSE SOAP from Martin de Candre that my friend Marion insisted that I buy. It is made from fresh roses at and the aroma is heavenly. It is so amazing how much our SENSES effect our mood. There is something about the smell of fresh roses that brings me back to the French countryside where everything is beautiful. There is nothing better than a hot bubble bath with a bar of Rose Soap. *runs away from computer and starts running bath water..*

In the heart of the Loire château country sits the Domaine de Mestré, a beautiful country estate which has been run as a family soap making business for thirty five years. The soaps are made to old recipes, using the Marseille method, from natural ingredients. Olive or palm oil is used and all the fragrances are from essential oils. They are left to dry for two months; the drier a soap, the more developped its perfume becomes.

I also purchased a small bottle of pillow mist for pleasant dreams.

Paris in One Day

After putting out a call on Twitter for Paris recommendations, someone suggested that the best way to see Paris is by Batobus.

Stop #1. Tour Eiffel

The Eiffel Tour of course! It needs no further explanation, this tower is the symbol of Paris!

Stop #2. Musee d'Orsay

This museum houses an extensive art collection including Art Nouveau, sculpture, painting before 1870, Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Naturalism and Symbolism.

Stop #3. St. Germain des Pres

St. Germain des Pres is said to be the oldest church in Paris, originating in 542 A.D. I would have really liked to see it.. But I got lost. Eh.. Can't win 'em all. But I will say happily that while I was looking I came across a reproduction of Josephine Baker for 1,50 Euro which I of course had to buy. Josephine Baker IS Paris as far as I'm concerned..

Stop #4. Notre Dame (MUST SEE!)

The most beautiful place I've ever seen. Hands down. And FREE! (which is my favorite word). No other building is associated with the history of Paris as Notre Dame. It stands majestically on the Ile de la Cite, an island in the middle of the Seine river.

I was very moved by Notre Dame. I have been increasingly interested in Catholicism and find it intersesting how many representations of the Virgin Mary with child were present here. I can't wait to post more the pictures I took here.. It is truly an incredible sight. This church is also available for prayer and confessions.. about 2 Euros a pop. Apparently God ain't FREE.

Stop #5. Jardin des Plantes

I was a little disappointed by it to say the least.. Not gonna lie. This botanical garden was established in 1626 originally as a royal medicinal herb garden. Not so sure what's been happening since then but a great deal of the plants were dead! Call me spoiled after traveling to tropical locations such as Ghana, Brazil and Puerto Rico.. And seeing REAL exotic plants.. I was just expecting a little more. Perhaps next trip I would like to visit the zoo here but if not I would say:

1. Skip it.
2. Don't do it and said you did.
3. Do it just to say you did.

Stop #6. Hotel de Ville

I can't say too much about this place because by this time I was starving and became a little distracted by the shopping. This is a great area with lots of shops and places to eat but also quite busy. Marion tells me this is the place to be.. and they have live music and tango in the evenings. Hotel de Ville is the home of the city council and the square was once the main site for hangings, burnings and other executions.

Stop #7. The Louvre.

I didn't reach the Louvre until around 7:00 pm so I unfortunately was not able to go in.. But will have to spend at LEAST a few days at this place next trip because this place is GIGANTIC. I think it is literally the size of Harlem. The Louvre museum contains one of the most important art collections in the world including the Mona Lisa.

Stop #8. Champs Elysees - Arc de Triomphe

And finally back to Champs Elysses which is where I started and where my hotel is. I think the Arc is absolutely beautiful.. The first site I saw in Paris.. And it is a great deal larger than I originally imagined.

And finally after all of that I am in desperate need for a hot bubble bath and a glass of wine.. an integral part of today's tour. You never really appreciate a bath until you can't have one! I love Paris a whole lot more than I thought I would. My time is quickly coming to an end. So much to see and so little time.. Until tomorrow, Au Revoir!

Port Boulet

Ah! I had an incredible day today. I went to visit a very good friend of mine, Marion, in a small town outside of Paris called Port Boulet. Marion and I met while she was an exchange student at NYU and we took a course together taught by the infamous Anna Deavere Smith. Anna partnered the two of us together to create and perform an acting piece which combined Quartet a monologue that Marion taught me in French and June Jordan's "A Poem About My Rights", an African-American writer. It was during this process that Marion and I became great friends and explored concepts of race, identity, womanhood and each other. We have been soul-mates ever since.. But I digress..

I called Marion when I arrived in Paris and she told me that she was away on a road-trip with her boyfriend in the French countryside and that she was not able to meet up with me while I was in Paris. "Are you upset with me?" she asked, "Of course not!" I responded.. And we said our goodbyes. Marion has always been very receptive to my change in emotions because like me, she is a CANCER.. Our birthdays are only a few days apart. She called me right back and asked me to meet her in Port Boulet.. And as she says, she knew I would say Yes.

So early this morning I managed to navigate my way on the Paris Metro to the Gare Montparnasse train station and purchased a round-trip ticket to Port Boulet where she, her boyfriend, and his mother picked me up.

As if the train ride through the French countryside wasn't beautiful enough, they drove me around to see the town which is by far the most charming place I have ever seen. They took me to see a Catholic Cathedral which was built in the 1100s and a number of castles which peppered the countryside. (we were planning to see it all by bicycle but somehow I managed to bring the rain with me from New York to Ghana and also to France).

While it was raining we stopped to have tea and cider and this amazing little place which had all sorts of old books for sale.

Then we went to visit a shop that made soaps by hand from all of the roses that grew all over the town.. Literally all over..

This place smelled like heaven.. So of course I had to pick up a fewthings for my mother and I.. But I decided that I would have to bring her back here one day.

While at the cafe, Marion and I decided to purchase these little notebooks that displayed famous commedia dell arte scenes. I chose this one..

Which shows a woman stabbing a man in the heart.. A scene from Moliere. It says on the back, "Ah! La belle chose que de savoir quelque chose" which Julian explains means vaguely that things aren't always how they seem. He found it ironic that I chose that one while Marion chose one with men pouring themselves over one woman. She bats her eyelids and asks him to buy them for us. He of course blushes and says "of course". Later, Marion informs me that I will Never find a boyfriend by stabbing them in the heart. I guess she is right about this one.. She asks me what I think of her boyfriend and I tell her he's a sweetheart. She says she wants to find a French boyfriend for me so that I will have to stay here with her.. We'll see.

We ride through the countryside and they point out many more beautiful things.. My heart slows and for the first time all trip I am peaceful.

They drop me off at the train station and we say our goodbyes.. Marion and I hug and tear up a little. She promises me that next time I will stay with her at her parents' horse ranch. I of course think this is a great idea because I love to ride! (even though it has been many years). On the way back to Paris, I stop in a town called Tours for dinner.. Margherita pizza and wine of course. Merci!
