My Mission Statement

Artistic Aims

Revolution is essentially a work of the human heart and spirit.  As political activist Dhoruba Bin-Wahad explains, “we need to address the heart”.  People get involved in struggles because of what is in their hearts.  We cannot change our conditions as a people, as a movement, until we first change the condition of our hearts.  The path of the artist is in essence a spiritual path which is initiated and practiced through creativity.  I believe that as both artists and human beings, a sense of spirituality is essential to the process of creation.  Once we heal ourselves and reach our full creative potential, we can tap into the life-force energy of Love to begin to change the world.  Martin Luther King himself explains that his basic philosophical and theological orientation was completely centered around the idea of love.  Love is God in manifestation.  It is the strongest magnetic force in the universe and the one quality which unites us all.

I believe that art should educate, inform, organize, influence and incite to action.  The artist should not only be a creative being, but a teacher of morality and a political advisor.  As Artists, we must give of ourselves unselfishly to become the voice of conscience in society. All art reflects the value system from which it comes.  This work is directly related to the historical, economic, educational, and social development of marginalized and disenfranchised communities.

In his essay, “The Revolutionary Theatre” Amiri Baraka explains that art should move victims to look at the strength in their own minds and bodies. Transformational Activism is the idea that we can tap into the power of mass collaboration and collective creativity to transform people into more loving, peaceful, and compassionate human beings.  It is based on the idea that people need to transform on the inside as well as on the outside in order to create any meaningful change in the world. I have always believed in the power of art to transform lives and mobilize communities.  Once we recognize and embrace our individual creative potential, we can then collectively explore how the Arts can be used as a vehicle for social change.

Emmanuel Jal

Emmanuel Jal, a former child-soldier from Sudan gave an awesome performance at the "United Nations Day Concert". He is currently fasting for 365 days to raise money for the school he is building in Sudan.. a truly incredible human being..

His film, War Child chronicles the tumultuous, shocking, inspiring, and ultimately hopeful odyssey of Emmanuel Jal. A former child soldier of Sudan's brutal civil war, he is now an emerging international hip hop star sharing a message of peace for his war-torn land and beloved Africa.

In the early 1980s at the age of seven, Jal was swept into Sudan's civil war, becoming one of 10,000 child soldiers conscripted on both sides of the two decade long conflict. After being forced to do many unimaginably horrible things, he escaped the soldier's camp and trekked for four months through Africa. He was eventually found and adopted by the now legendary British aid worker Emma McCune who had married Sudanese guerrilla commander Riek Machar and convinced him to not employ child soldiers. Shortly after she adopted Jal, McCune died in a suspicious car crash, leaving Emmanuel "orphaned" once again. Jal rose from ruthless child soldier to refugee to rap star. He found his own redemption and life mission through a message of peace that represents one of the 21st centuries' most inspiring and hopeful journeys, and a metaphor for the broader African predicament.

Emmanuel's journey is, in many ways, just beginning. His dream of Gua (peace) in Sudan and prosperity in Africa is threatened by corrupt leaders, genocidal warlords, and Western indifference. Hopefully, Emmanuel's peace quest to make the world a better place through his music, activism and youth education will prove to be far more significant than Emmanuel's former war.

War Child tells the story of Jal's life through his words and music, and remarkable film footage dating back to his childhood. Even at the age of seven, Emmanuel's charisma were so evident that National Geographic focused their own 1980's reportage on him as spokesperson for the children. Today, as Emmanuel travels the World, even into the halls of the US State Department, he takes us through his homeland's tormented history of civil war, assesses the prospects for peace after the country's 2005 ceasefire agreement, highlights the increasing problem of war children, and shines light on the growing African hip hop scene that is tackling the continent's ills through its music.

About Emmanuel Jal

Emmanuel Jal (born ca. 1980), a former child soldier in Sudan, has won worldwide acclaim for his unique style of hip hop music infused with messages of peace and reconciliation. Emmanuel was taken from his family home in 1987, at the age of seven, and sent to fight with the SPLA rebel army in Sudan's bloody civil war. For nearly five years, Emmanuel carried and slept next to an AK-47 that was taller than him. He was sent to Ethiopa and Southern Sudan to fight with thousands of other children that were uprooted from their villages.

Emmanuel has been featured in Time magazine, USA Today, The Times, The Guardian, the Washington Post, CNN, Fox, VOA, BBC, MTV, and Sky amongst many other news outlets. As a spokesman for Amnesty International and Oxfam, Emmanuel has held two press briefings at the United Nations in New York making him the first hip hop artist to do so. He also addressed congressional staffers on Capitol Hill about the plight of the people of Darfur and the pressing need for an international response to stop the genocide. Emmanuel has won an American Gospel Award, as well as a community service award in Kenya for his work promoting peace among youth. He has also recently been nominated for the MTVu Good Woodie Award given to activists for their commitments to social causes affecting the greatest change in the world.

His autobiography, "War Child: A Child Soldier's Story", will be released by St. Martin's Press in February 2009. His most recent album, "Warchild" was released on 12 May 2008 on the Sonic360 label (distributed by ADA Global) with additional production and mix by Neal Pogue (who had done work for various major artists including Outkast, Talib Kweli, and Pharoahe Monch).

Emmanuel recently performed at The V Festival in the UK, the Greenbelt Festival, and the first Black Ball in the UK for Keep a Child Alive (Alicia Keys foundation). He met with Nelson Mandela and performed at the tribute concert for his 90th birthday at Hyde Park in London. Emmanuel is currently touring the East Coast of North America speaking and performing at Colleges and Universities throughout the region.

About Gua Africa US

GUA Africa US' mission is to work with individuals, families and communities to help them overcome the effects of war and poverty. Each of our projects focus on providing an education to children and young adults who would otherwise be denied such opportunity. Currently our work is in Kenya and Sudan, however in the future we would like to expand into other areas of Sub-Saharan Africa - working with other experienced partner organizations where ever opportunities arise.

By supporting the film, you also help support Jal's lifelong dream of Gua, or peace, in Africa. Five percent (5%) of gross revenues of the filme go towards Gua Africa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities in Sudan and Kenya overcome the effects of war and poverty through education.

Jimmy Choo for H&M

because "saving green" is the best way of "going green"..
I'm a little bit more excited about this "artistic collaboration" than most.

Starting November 14th, (lady's best friend) designer Jimmy Choo will bring its international glamour and covetable shoes and bags to selected H&M stores. It is the first time that H&M is collaborating with an accessories brand, and to celebrate Jimmy Choo will extend its design vision for this collection to women’s clothing to complement the accessories. Further exciting news is that this collaboration includes a men’s collection of shoes, bags and accessories. Now if only I had a boy of my very own to dress.. Anti-Matter

There is matter and there is anti-matter.
They both are basically the same.
They both are energy.
Anti-matter is the same as normal matter except for the fact that they both have opposite charges.
Instead of positive protons and negative electrons,
Anti-matter has negative protons and positive electrons.
When the two collide they instantly annihalate each other creating pure energy.
The energy is used to create more of like kind, be it positive or negative.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it simply changes form.
An expanding bubble of radiation
A single flash of light.
Like a Super-Nova
A cosmic twin of opposite form we create with every thought.
There's no "atmosphere" in space.
Matter is ten times more powerful than it's counterpart, Anti-Matter.. which yields 100% efficiency.

2012:
A shift in Earth's magnetic field may not necessarily cause...
Atomic explosions in space
But a centering of our hearts around a common area of interest..
Love.
Love has the power to shift the moon and the stars.
Love, pure positive power, must always be the center of our motivation.

Health Care Monologues

Click here to check out the article featured in Sunday's New York Times Magazine! I am quoted on Page Four woot! woot!

So I must say.. I was slightly ecstatic when I got the news that Anna Deavere Smith recommended me to be interviewed for this feature article in New York Times Magazine. Although it is only just a quote.. uh.. it is the New York Times!! This is just the first of many times my name will grace the pages of the New York Times.. it all starts with a tiny thought.

And if the Universe could not have more perfect timing Anna invited me to come and see her new show "Let Me Down Easy" on Sunday as well. She has such an incredible talent. When I think of the idea that there is something that each of us is designed to do that no one else can do.. I think of her. She can "become" not "play" up to 30 characters at a time! Men and women.. from all walks of life.. REALISTICALLY. She truly is a gem. I have so much more to say.. but I encourage you to read the article!!!

The Absence.

Prison.

BOY. Let us now consider the electrical application of this union of opposites. A positive, electrical charge is the male, whereas a negative magnetic one is the female. When the two fuse, creative action occurs. A spark is lit, and POWER is generated.

It is this male, electric, and female, magnetic, process that causes the planet to rotate, a car to move, a flower to grow, a child to be CREATED. Looking at the Sun, our Star, the male, electrical, positive, power, whose rays strike like the magnetic female moon. The combination of both rays reaches the earth, causes fertilization, MOVEMENT, and growth.

The same growth is reflected in the relationship between the sexes. When a spiritually minded man, who represents the sun, and a spiritually minded woman, who represents the moon, fall in Love with each other, their two natures merge creatively, stimulating and nourishing one another in a way that is ESSENTIAL to create inspiration.

When man and woman learn to be sensitive to this interplay of the powers between them, they will experience a contentment so absolute that it surpasses raptures, tranquility of more worth than ecstacy. Indeed their fulfillment and sense of wholeness, oneness, and completion will be Seven times greater than that of the average physical pairing.

A man has to know a woman's worth, and a woman MUST KNOW HER WORTH. A woman has to know a real man's worth. This is the truth. I am the truth. The truth is beautiful. It gives order, design, harmony, and balance to anything that partakes of it. Truth is beautiful in that it's qualities exalt the body, mind, soul, and spirit. Truth is beautiful in the sense that it is simple and uncomplicated, yet profound. It is natural, and like the rose it needs no decoration or embellishment. Like a man and a woman become One, it is complete, no more, no less.

*******This piece was written last year in a play titled, "The Absence" which was based on letters received by a friend of mine who was incarcerated at an Alabama State Prison. (C/2008)*******

It is so ironic how writing stays with you.. creativity is a spiritual process.

A Million Dollar Lesson

I just realized from looking at previous Mama Earrings post that the leather jacket I have on looks suprisingly similar to this denim jacket from Colette that I added to my vision board last month!

Some may say that I just know what I like and that is the reason for the similarity.. That may be true.. But it is also how the Universe works!

For example.. The other day while hanging out with one of my girlfriends, a man approached us and asked if we would like to see a magic trick. We said sure and at the conclusion of the trick he gave us each a million dollar bill..

Well needless to day the bill is not real and he turned out to be a crazynut job.. Later that evening when I got home I remembered that just a few days prior I was thinking that I wanted a million dollar bill for my vision board! I thought about how I was going to get one/make one... Turns out I didn't have to do anything but just be in the right place and the right time..

The more you practice Love.. The Easier it will be to see how positive thinking manifests itself in your life.. It is like your own magic genie!

From My iPhone

The Perfect Bathtub

So we already know I'm all about the vision board. I think it is very important for my SANITY to imagine those things in life that I want. So while I am in the process of "designing" my dream home, I decided to spend a little time focusing on what I believe is the most important room in the house.. The Bathroom. Women know how important the bathroom is.. It is where we go to be alone.. to think.. to take a long heavenly hot bubble bath and create our own private oasis. (Think Nancy on Weeds)

I am so amazed by Kohler and their VibrAcoustic Bath! Who knew you could integrate sound into your bath?! Umm... I need this tub.

You can even add Chromatherapy which uses the soothing qualities of color to let your mind and body relax.

UPDATED! Mama Earrings

So yes.. My Mama Earrings arrived in the mail yesterday. I guess you could say that I cheated and just bought them for myself.. but didn't I still get them? I have complete faith in the universe that if I had waited along enough for them I could have found a way to get them for FREE.. but when God was handing out PATIENCE I was in the bathroom... *don't look at me like that, I had to GO!*
God continually blesses me with the ability to get those things that I want.. that is what Wealth is for isn't it? Think Rich!

Post from Last Week:

I am using the Law of Attraction for these Melody Ehsani earrings to commemorate my wonderful summer in Ghana. Africa has my HEART. I am DREAMING that these earrings would just arrive in the mail one day.
One can only dream.

Our deepest fear...

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

-Marianne Williamson

Habana Outpost

Yeah.. so I'm in Love with this place. Habana Outpost, a fun, modern, eco-eatery in Brooklyn New York was built on the principles of great food, great fun, and social responsibility. Their mission is to show respect for the community, the environment, and the arts in a setting that is always fun and accessible.

Habana Outpost
is NYC's first eco-eatery. Eco-eateries are restaurants which use earth-friendly practices in their design, construction and day to day operations.

Habana Works Inc. is a nonprofit organization that aims to better the community through free programs that educate, unite and engage local members. Habana Works' programs demonstrate the impact of environmentally conscious thought and action within a community. These programs use art, architecture, videography, and design as tools to engage and instill a greater understanding of the community's role in the betterment of the planet.

Habana Outpost uses Solar Panels to convert the sun's energy into the electricty to power the restaurant.

They also use have a Rainwater Collection System which collects water from the roof of the restaurant which sanitizes, filters and stores water. It also is used to water all the plants in the garden and flush toilets.

They even have a Human powered Bike Blender which uses pedaling instead of electricity and Solar-powered cell phone and laptop charges so that customers can recharge while they eat. All in all this is a pretty awesome place and I definitely suggest making a trip here if you ever find yourself in BK.. as I have been finding myself quite a bit lately.

Just a "quick" note to say..

If you have not noticed this blog is centered around the concept of positive thinking because that is what FREEDOM means to me. Freedom from restraint. Freedom from history. Freedom from oppression. And Freedom from limitation in all forms. It is fact that there are many injustices all over the world and it is our collective responsibility to fight against them, but I believe Mother Teresa said it best when she made the statement:

"I will not attend an anti-war rally. If you have a PEACE rally, invite me."

In other words, let's STOP complaining about all of the things that we Don't want and start focusing on the things we Do. Ya dig? We can all talk about it till we are blue in the face but what is actually being done? I focus on those people who take Action in creating a better existence for themselves and the world around them. I focus on positivity and creative expression. Best of all, I focus on LOVE.

A former version of myself could get on here and rant and rave about capitalism.. or racism.. or homophobia which are all issues very dear to my heart.. But without highlighting the ACTIVISM what might I ask would be the point? What are we DOING?

I firmly believe in the idea that We are the Creators of our own lives. We are the author of the book of our lives and have been given the pen. What do we create for ourselves and the world around us? Constant complainers are sickening to me. What are they doing besides giving more energy to things we don't need? Why not focus on what we Love, the beautiful things in our lives? We should focus our energy on uplifting and inspiring those around us. We should be *smiling*.

My thoughts keep taking me back to Africa.. and to Happy, our Ghanaian friend and guide. I do not have to wonder how he got his name because his smile is pure Sunshine. He has a loving spirit that infects all who meet him. Most Ghanaians are this way, they are so quick to laugh and get you to laugh too! I was amazed and am continually inspired by this sense of happiness amongst so much poverty. WHAT ARE WE COMPLAINING FOR?! There are many greater issues involved with this idea that I will not get into right now because for one.. It's almost 2AM.. and for two.. I'm typing this on my iPhone using one thumb which makes it difficult to eloquently construct an argument about foreign aid in Africa.. Like and such as........

*deep breath*. I am a very thankful human being. I am not perfect but I strive everyday for Perfection. I have a huge heart and it bleeds for the world. I am learning and growing each and every day of my life... Like a caterpillar who reaches the heightened view of the butterfly.. Emerging as something new. I greet each day with fresh eyes and prepare for miracles which Do come True. I am Alive. And if we are not growing we are dying.

I appreciate your reading my "not-so-quick" note and supporting my blog. I hope you will find at least one thing that inspires you.. That is my joy in writing this. I apologize for any typos.. You must admit tho, Ima boss wit the iPhone! Love and Light to You and Yours.

P.S. Obama is doing an Amazing job. Suck on that.

Livingstones

Who knew sleeping on stones could be so comfortable?! I am so in love with this Living Stones lounge set designed by French interior designer, Stephanie Marin of Smarin Design. I think it would be the perfect edition to creating a perfect indoor "Green" oasis.. which makes it a perfect addition to my vision board! Dear Stephanie Marin, please send free livingstones to make my life complete :-) And please be sure to check out the website for other great indoor/outdoor design.

Smarin has presented Stéphanie Marin's creations since 2004, and each year it offers a family of objects in which each element is used independently or together: soft forms and simple lines that match each other and overlap to infinity.

Euphoria and lightness of furniture: a consideration which is centred around our relationship to the environment, the need to remember and to experience movement in nature. Metaphorical objects that are useful and beautiful for a new habitat.

An independent design philosophy, responsible eco-development design, and 100% French production: in the workshop in Nice craftsmanlike know-how and creative exuberance are combined, and we see the birth of top-of-the-range production where added value means innovation and quality.

W - New York

It is like I woke up this morning and realized how much I loved New York. New York and I have been engaged in the most serious love-hate relationship for the past six years but he knows he will always have my heart. I thought I would just take the time to highlight one of my favorite places in the City.. The W Hotel.

There are a few W New York hotels in the city, each with their own personality. My favorite is the location on Lexington on the East Side. My undergrad dorms being a few blocks away, I would often escape here for a day at Bliss Spa.

It became like my own private oasis away from the noise of the city and the stress. The steam room in this place is heaven sent. I can't count how many hours of my life I spent in there. After operation-relaxation is complete, I like to go down to the lobby of the W Hotel and have a cocktail. I certainly suggest if you are making a trip to the city or are just looking for a relaxing weekend retreat, you should indulge yourself.. this is definitely the place to go. Did I mention they have the most comfortable beds.. EVER?

Brotherhood Sister-Sol

Yesterday I had a beautiful meeting with a young brother by the name of Orisanmi Burton at the Brotherhood Sister-Sol organization in Harlem. They are doing some AMAZING things over there. Brotherhood/Sister Sol offers a safe space full of the resources for Black and Latino youth to speak their minds, acquire knowledge and skills, explore their identity and beliefs, and receive support to make their dreams reality. Their programs and activities - mentoring, leadership development, international study, academic tutoring, internships, community service, job training, writing collective, youth organizing - provide these young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and overcome the negative pressures of poverty, racism, drugs, and violence.

Check Out This Piece: Black Boys Don't Cry: Manhood in Urban America

Check out their International Study Program:

International Study Program--Our International Study Program is a natural continuation of our emphasis on leadership development, Pan-African and Latino history and culture, and global awareness. It is a year-long program with an intensive four-week study program conducted in Africa and Latin America. Our members expand their horizons, develop leadership skills, and gain new and complex perspectives. Language classes, research projects, exploring cultural sites, completing service projects, and visiting NGOs and schools are some of the activities members have experienced in Morocco, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt, Ghana, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Brasil.

Prior to the trip, participants fundraise to help offset program fees and participate in regular planning meetings, as well as attending a week-long orientation. While overseas, participants begin to learn the language of the country they are visiting, meet with representatives in government, business, education, and community development, and have extended stays in rural villages or small towns. They also plan and facilitate seminars, undertake extensive research and make public presentations

LivingHomes

If you don't like your neighbors, pick up your house and move! One thing very little people know about me is that I am very interested in Interior Design and Architecture. I have been following LivingHomes for quite some time and am so intrigued by the concept of a Green, sustainable, virtually portable home. You buy the land and they will bring you your house.

LivingHomes builds homes that are created by world-class architects, which feature warm, modern design, functional amenities, and great price value. Their homes include natural, non-toxic and sustainably-derived materials; and they're made in specially equipped factories that ensure unsurpassed quality, lower construction cost and waste, and shorten schedules. The result of all this: healthier, happier homes that have a dramatically smaller ecological footprint than most new homes. If this sounds interesting to you, I encourage you to visit their website.. you can even design your own virtual home on the site.

Three Things I Miss About Amsterdam

After looking through some of my iPhone pics today on the subway.. (I have over 600 iPhone pics) I started to realize how much I miss Amsterdam!! I am so THANKFUL for having the opportunity to go there. Three things I miss the most:

Yes friends.. These are French Fries.. Dutch famous French Fries to be exact. Fully loaded with cheddar cheese and ketchup mmmmmm. I think one day this was actually all I ate and this was a medium! Just imagine what a Large looks like. The day I took this pic I got an order of these bad boys, a bottle of icy cold water, a fat juicy brownie and sat in Dam Square and people-watched.. Ah! Nostalgia. What I would do for an order of Dutch famous fries like right now.

My mouth is watering just looking at this delicious pancake.. Or PANNEKOEKEN as they say in Dutch. (see my fabulous bi-lingualism coming out <--P.S. Only Dutch word I know.. oh wait "Goedemorgen" means "Good Morning".. Go figure! Anyway, top this bad boy off with some powdered sugar and some syrup.. *runs away from computer to start packing for Amsterdam*

Third thing I miss most about Amsterdam is AMSTERDAM! The canals.. The cute little houses.. The friendly people.. The shopping... Haarlem! LOL I think it is so funny that there is an Amsterdam in Harlem, and a Haarlem in Amsterdam.. but I have a feeling that only amuses me ;-/ I just can't wait to get back there.

A Green Apple

It was probably about this time last summer that I attempted my first demonstration of the Law of Attraction. I decided to ask for something small, but something that I would not normally get for myself so that way I would know for sure that it worked. I decided to attract a Green Apple. Not just any Green Apple, but the most delicious Green Apple that I had ever tasted. You can ask my mother.. I am certainly not one to go around willy nilly purchasing fruits and vegetables for myself (even though I do enjoy them) but one might say I could have easily just walked into any grocery store and bought a Green Apple.. case closed. But I didn't want to buy a Green Apple.. I wanted someone to give me a Green Apple for FREE.. with little to no effort on my part.

This may seem odd.. who would go around just giving delicious green apples away? C'mon I live in Harlem.. that type of thing may just get you shot! (just kidding) But I just held steadfast to my vision of a Green Apple. I imagined the size of the apple, how big it would be in the palm of my hand. I even imagined how the apple would taste in my mouth.. how juicy it would be. I created the image and I let it go.. never thinking of it again.

I'd say about week later on a sunny Sunday afternoon, I went on a walk to meet a friend of mine who lived in Harlem. As he was like a super vegan health nut.. and a straight black guy.. how random :) he was going grocery shopping and asked me to come along. Sure 'nuff not after a few mins. of wandering around Pathmark and him schooling me on healthy eating, he picked up a shiny Green Apple and asked if I would like for him to buy it for me. <<---- BEST APPLE EVER!! I wish I could remember HIS name or number.. but that's a different story.

Which basically brings me to my point that in order to get what we want we have to learn how to think a different way. You must know what you want and be specific and definite. You can never get rich or start the creative power into action by sending out unformed longings and vague desires. I wanted a delicious green apple.. not an apple. I knew how it felt in my hand.. I knew how it tasted. If you were going to send a text message to a friend, you would not send the letters of the alphabet in their order and let him construct the message for himself, nor would you take words random from the dictionary. You would send a coherent sentence, one which meant something. That is how you must communicate with God! Be specific and definite. That is why vision boards are so effective! Imagine your dream home. Cut out pictures. Imagine yourself walking through the rooms.. cooking things in your dream kitchen.

AND!!! Do not hesitate to ask a lot from the God. People look at poverty as if it is a part of the plan, a necessity of nature. They have the idea that God has finished his work, and made all that he can make, and that the majority of people must stay poor because there is not enough to go around. <---NOT TRUE! The Universe is infinite! There is more than enough for everyone!

In order to create "something" out of "nothing" a person must pass from the competitive to the CREATIVE mind. Others may not allow you to go on, become something NEW.. but your CREATOR does.. and we are here to CREATE. You must form a clear mental picture of the things you want and hold this picture in your thoughts with the fixed PURPOSE to get what you want, and the unwavering FAITH that you do get what you want, closing your mind to all that shakes your purpose or dims your vision.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell

This is an amazing film that Culture Project has screened in the past and might possibly be a part of our upcoming Women Center Stage programs. I encourage you to check out the trailer below:

Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.

Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country’s civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about a agreement during the stalled peace talks.

A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.

Anna Deavere Smith on Oprah's Power List

Anna Deavere Smith number #1. on Oprah's first ever Power List.. WOOT WOOT!

So I'm not as Obsessed with Oprah as certain gay-guy friends of mine.. but it's Oprah.. c'mon. Isn't she like the mother of the Universe err.. something. So of course I was happy when my mother told me that Anna Deavere Smith was one of 20 remarkable visionaries who Oprah was honoring for flexing their muscles in business, finance, politics, justice, science and the arts.

I have truly learned a great deal from Anna Deavere Smith. Not only has she been an incredible teacher to me, but she has been an inspiration and a light in my life. A couple months ago she invited me to come and greet some of her VIP guests at a show she was doing for the World Science Festival. The show was called "Watching Wilson and Watson and the Future of Life on Earth". I am continually amazed at her brilliance, and her ability to play multiple characters Flawlessly. I saw her later that evening at the cocktail reception at the end of the show and I just smiled, cried, and hugged her. I felt that her success was my success and I was overwhelmed by how much of a remarkable woman she is.

As a performer, I believe that Anna Deavere Smith was able to bring something very special out of me on stage.. a part of myself that I had never met. She was intrigued by my emotional range, and the fact that I could "cry on cue".. (something that I have practiced my entire life.. just ask my Daddy). She even cried with me when I told her of how much I LOVE the Theatre and the way that such exciting things happen there..

..and of course she partnered me with my Twin Marion! (see earlier post from France)

She has been hailed "the most exciting individual in American theater", and as her biggest fan.. I have to agree. (I may have some exciting news coming up involving ADS and the New York Times but we will just have to wait and see..) Here she is!

The Power of Loud: Anna Deavere Smith
Actor and playwright

You've seen her in Nurse Jackie and Rachel Getting Married, but Anna Deavere Smith isn't just an actor. Her one-woman plays (next up: Let Me Down Easy, premiering in New York in October) are a form of theater unto themselves, brilliantly conjuring the voices of real people. Speaking of voices, we asked Smith what happens when you turn up the volume:

August, circa 2000, not far from Monte Carlo, at a rehearsal for a concert. The stage—outside in the bright sun and naked except for masses of tangled wires—was on the French-Italian border. Literally straddling the border. Workmen were setting up for a soloist who would sing that night. I was sitting in the bleachers, enthralled. Suddenly a fast-moving train loudly zoomed through on its way from France to Italy. I put down my espresso. Would that train be going through during the concert? Whose idea was it to put a singer in the middle of a train route, anyway?

That night, when the great soprano Jessye Norman stepped onstage, exhilaration was followed by one engulfing human hush. Just at a peak moment, I heard that train approaching. Jessye Norman's voice shut it down.

We don't all have the ability to sing out over a racing train, but we do have the power to speak up—and out. A voice can get a party started, shout down opponents, or lead a country. Vocal cords are like any other part of your body. They are there to be worked.
